Are You Making These Common Tooth brushing Mistakes?

Many people go years and years of their lives thinking they are doing everything possible to maintain optimum dental health but are unknowingly making mistakes. In this week’s blog, we’ll look at some common mistakes people make in brushing and flossing,

THE WRONG TOOTHBRUSH

  • If you have a small mouth, be sure to use a small toothbrush, and if you have a larger mouth, a larger toothbrush is called for.
  • A toothbrush should be soft as well, so always buy toothbrushes labeled “soft.”
  • Even if you use the right toothbrush, if you use it for too long, it can become the wrong brush. You should replace your toothbrush every few months. If the bristles become bent over before a few months, you are brushing too hard.

BRUSHING TOO HARD

  • As stated above, if the bristles of your toothbrush get  worn out and bend over quickly, you are brushing too hard.  This can damage your teeth and gums.
  • Think of your toothbrush more as a broom than a scrub brush to get the right pressure.
  • Brushing too hard can cause your gums to recede and excess wear on the enamel coating  your teeth, thinning and weakening it.

NOT BRUSHING FOR LONG ENOUGH

  • If you don’t brush long enough, you are not alone. Most people brush their teeth for just 45 seconds, just a fraction of the full two minutes recommended by dentists.
  • By using a timer or an electronic toothbrush with a timer, you can make sure you are brushing for the full two minutes.
